Questions and Answers

What brings people to art therapy?

People come to art therapy for different reasons. I see clients who live with:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • substance use
  • body image issues
  • relationship and self-esteem issues
  • dementia
  • grief
  • caregiver strain
  • chronic stress
  • self harm
  • eating disorders
  • separation/divorce
  • trauma

Is the idea for me to make good art in art therapy?

No. The idea is for you to make your art, whatever it looks or sounds like. I’m here to support you in the process of creation, and to talk with you about the things you create.

Do I need to be an experienced artist to come to art therapy?

No. You can be an absolute beginner. I'll introduce you to materials if you’re not sure how to use them.

Can I also make music and/or write in my work with you?

Yes. I have guitars, a keyboard, and hand-percussion instruments available for you to work with. You're welcome to bring in writing you've done, or to do some writing during a session.

Do I need to like art to come to art therapy?

It helps.
